Thys and Coretha established La Rochelle, Wellington in 2002. The original building dates back around 1865. Much time, effort, energy and creativity lovingly went into the restoration of this grand Victorian lady. Thys and Coretha are warm, loving and hospitable. They operate their establishments meticulously and guests are made to feel welcome. Many guests have become firm friends and have returned through the years.
Prior to La Rochelle, for 10 years, Thys and Coretha served as House Parents at Bliss Hall, a student residence and beautiful landmark of Wellington.
Coretha has a degree in Home Economics from the University of Stellenbosch. Her passion and attention to detail is evident in her selection of the fine linens and décor at La Rochelle. Coretha is a superb hostess and her breakfasts are a favourite amongst regulars to La Rochelle.
Thys studied a BSc degree, is passionate about lecturing Biology and Science. When he is not in a lecture hall, he can be found outdoors at La Rochelle taking care of the maintenance, woodwork and tending the grounds. His numerous talents include the steelwork and burglar bars at La Rochelle. Thys landscaped and paved the grounds, installed the swimming pool and mastered the renovations. He has restored endless furniture and has a good eye for sought-after pieces.
Thys and Coretha have 4 adult children and are the proud grandparents of 2 grandchildren. When time allows, Thys and Coretha enjoy an activity known as Parkrun and, hiking and camping. A pastime they share with friends and family.
The Odendal’s are respected residents of the community from as far back as 1985, well informed about Wellington’s history, museum, wine farms, restaurants and places of interest, including extensive knowledge of routes off the beaten track.
They are the “epitome” of Boland hospitality and you will leave richer than when you arrived.
